BRIEF HISTORY
Over the last 100 years, the Franklin County Council and then its successor, the 12th District Council had
tried several times to establish an American Legion post in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. The first such recorded attempt was at the Franklin County Council meeting of April 16, 1927. Then in November 26,
1974, the 12th District Council tried again to make a Reynoldsburg post a reality. However, plans for the Reynoldsburg post fell through, and it was not until late 2001 that the post came into being,
along with its new sister post, Gahanna Post 797. The post’s charter was later issued and dated June 9, 2003. The first post commander was James Weatherly. Initially, this post was made up of
Legionnaires who worked at the Defense Construction Supply Center (DCSC) off East Broad Street, and their meetings were held there on the supply base. When this was pointed out as being improper
(American Legion posts cannot be located on federal property), it was decided to relocate the meetings to the City of Reynoldsburg. The post name was changed at that time.
Starting in April of 2014, Post 798, which had been holding its monthly meetings at the new Truro Township Fire Department at the corner of Brice Road and Livingston Avenue, made a critical decision
to change locations. The post, in an agreement with the F.O.E. Eagles #3261 on 1623 Brice Rd, Reynoldsburg Brice Road, started having meetings there. The post’s most notable member is Navy veteran
Robert McPherson, who for 20 years served as mayor for the City of Reynoldsburg.
In mid-September, 2014, retired airborne veteran Tim Dunn, who had served admirably as the post commander for several years, sustained a severe injury from an accident in his garage and passed away from complications on September 23, 2014. 1st Vice Commander Margaritis (who also served as the 12th District Council Past District Commander, 2011-2012) took over as post commander.
After the worst of the coronavirus had hit Ohio and suspended post activities, an officer election was held at the August 2020 meeting. After seven years of service, Post Commander Margaritis stepped down and Finance Officer Mussi was elected.
The post's current Finance Officer, George Mussi Jr., has also been a city service director of the decades, one time for Columbus Mayor Buck Rinehart, and then for Reynoldsburg Mayor Robert McPherson. He is also currently the 12th District Council immediate past district commander.
